The driver made a mistake with Mr Dalrae. You can't whip him. Dave Magee found that out in Chicago. When Dave started fanning the whip only he took off like a rocket. He would bring him 5 wide in the stretch just so nobody would get in his way.

I was at Roosevelt the night of that race. As I recall, that was the first time ever they got to three-quarters in under 1:26 for three-quarters. It's a shame that Roosevelt went under a couple of years later, but there were a lot of shady dealings there as I recall.If I were to rebuild Roosevelt today, I would do it as a seven-eighths of a mile oval. If they had done that in the '60s, Roosevelt would probably be still there today.

Great to hear Jack E Lee's voice again. I grew up listening to him at night and Fred Cappasella in the daytime. The two greatest race callers ever.
