They're actually leaving Earth because they're smarter than the humans who aren't aware of the impending doom brought on by the construction of a new intergalactic highway being built straight through where Earth is.

I would urge anyone who hasn't done so already to read the first 3 books of the series. They totally blow the movie out of the water. The movie took all the best jokes from the book and sucked all the humor out of them.

He wasn't really a Sci-fi writer though. He just happened to write a humorous Sci-fi story. He was more of a comedy writer.
