It isn't rocket science. If a religion doesn't work, try something else. But for most people after they had a bad experience with a certain religion (kids being molested by priests) then they link in their mind that all religions are bad. So the ones with weak beliefs don't even go for a second shot at a different religion. So now we have what are called 'NON Believers'. No wonder 20,000 americans turn to Islam each years. Why aren't they becoming atheists? THINK about it.

Don't blame the christians. Blame the ones who changed the religion long ago. Watch 'The Arrivals' on youtube. 50 part series and all got 5/5 ratings even by atheists. there is a reason why 'In God We trust' in America is all bull. Find out who actually owns america. Not the politicians but the ones who sign their paychecks.
